Will every previous credit count after transfer?
Plan graduation using confirmed credits, compulsory courses and semester availability, rather than the entry year alone.
Admission as a transfer student and recognition of previous credits are separate decisions. Establish both your entry year and which earlier courses count toward the new degree. When changing subjects, a large earned-credit total can coexist with many remaining compulsory courses.
Seoul National University’s official credit-recognition guidance includes international transfer students within its undergraduate scope and describes comparison with SNU’s curriculum. This is a post-admission academic rule. The guidance itself does not establish that international transfer admission is open for a particular intake.
Separate total credits from major credits
Recognised credits may fall under general education, major electives or compulsory requirements. Those categories affect what remains to study. Similar course names alone do not establish that a compulsory course has been replaced; prepare evidence of content, credits and teaching.
SNU’s guidance separates recognition of credits from recognition of grades and sets additional rules for major credits. Do not assume that previous grades enter the new GPA or that every recognised credit counts toward the major. Specific limits and categories belong to the relevant institution and department.
Previous-course record | Question at the new institution | Planning status |
|---|---|---|
Course, credits and semester | Corresponding current curriculum | Review requested |
Syllabus and content | Compulsory substitution or another category? | Estimated until decided |
Recognition notice | Confirmed credits and classification | Confirmed |
Outstanding courses | Prerequisites and semester availability | Planned |
Other degree requirements | Relevant language, exams or final project | Separate check |
Keep estimated and confirmed totals separate. A pre-admission discussion is not the university’s formal recognition decision.
Collect syllabuses before leaving
Obtain an official transcript, course descriptions and syllabuses in English or the language the receiving institution requires. A transcript may show a title and credits without enough information about what was taught.
Name files by semester and course, matching the English titles on the transcript. Keep originals paired with translations where needed; do not rewrite content to make a course seem more equivalent. Check whether the receiving university has its own form or verification requirements.
Calculate remaining semesters in the right order
First incorporate the formal recognition result. Then separate outstanding compulsory major courses and general requirements. Check prerequisites, the semesters courses are offered and enrolment limits. Dividing remaining credits by a semester’s maximum load does not by itself establish a graduation date.
For a fictional planning example, suppose an introductory course must precede a laboratory course offered only in spring. The sequence may affect the timetable even if sufficient credit capacity remains. This illustrates a planning method, not an actual university’s course arrangement.
Add subject-change and language checks
A change of field calls for attention to gaps in foundational and compulsory subjects. Recognition of some earlier credits does not remove the need for the new field’s foundations. Laboratory, practical and placement requirements may also have entry conditions.
Language preparation belongs in the timetable. Meeting an admission language condition and qualifying to take major courses can be different matters. Where compulsory language study or course restrictions apply, include them. Remaining semesters depend on the complete study plan, not only a credit total.
Review the decision through the proper procedure
SNU’s guidance provides an objection procedure after notification. Check its timing and evidentiary requirements, and support an enquiry with course-content comparisons rather than disappointment alone. Do not transfer that institution’s period automatically to another university.
For a GEA discussion, prepare a transcript, graduation-credit requirements, syllabus availability and intended major. Keeping application eligibility, post-admission recognition and graduation planning in separate sections makes each question easier to resolve.
