Can language scores still leave major-course restrictions?
Admission evidence and post-admission language training are separate. Include course limits in a transfer student’s study plan.
Submitting language evidence and receiving admission do not necessarily allow an unrestricted major-course load immediately. Check admission evidence and post-admission enrolment conditions separately. Compulsory language study or major-credit limits belong in the timetable, budget and graduation plan.
KU Seoul’s Spring 2027 international transfer guide has a separate table for intensive Korean training and major-course restrictions. Applications for that round ended in August 2026. The following is its specific example, not another university’s TOPIK rule or a minimum admission-score table.
Eligibility and course access answer different questions
Before applying, check accepted evidence and the department’s admission conditions. After admission, the submitted or institutionally assessed level may determine language study and course access. Submitting a report does not itself establish the absence of restrictions.
Departmental exceptions may exist. KU’s cited guide says students with high English proficiency may receive exemption from intensive Korean training and major restrictions depending on the department. Merely submitting an English score does not establish automatic exemption everywhere.
Translate the official table into a timetable
This summarises the TOPIK cases in that guide’s Korean-level table. It describes post-admission study conditions, not an admission guarantee.
TOPIK level in the cited guide | Intensive Korean training | Major courses |
|---|---|---|
Level 5 or above | No mandatory training | No restriction under this language criterion |
Level 4 | One mandatory semester | Up to 6 major credits per regular semester |
Level 3 or below | Two mandatory semesters | Major-course enrolment not allowed |
The lower-level rows separately describe total semester enrolment including general education. A six-credit major limit is not the total credit limit for all courses. Some language-level evidence from other institutions also requires the university’s own assessment, so distinguish the evidence type.
Why does this matter for transfer students?
Entry year alone may make the remaining study period look short. However, language training and restrictions can affect when compulsory courses fit. Place credit recognition and language conditions on the same timetable.
In a fictional plan, a transfer student intends to take 12 major credits in the first regular semester but has a six-credit major restriction. The student needs to check whether remaining courses can move to the next semester and whether prerequisites change the sequence. This illustrates planning, not a real student’s timetable or confirmed graduation duration.
Preparation involves more than another test
Ask whether and by when a new result can be submitted, whether the level can then be reassessed and who determines exemptions. Do not assume an unpublished reassessment or automatic waiver exists. Review the reading, writing and presentation tasks in first-semester courses too.
Track current score, level the university will apply, required training, major-course allowance and the next check date separately. Test preparation and readiness for the actual subject need to progress together.
Send a precise enquiry
State institution, department, degree, intake, evidence type and level, then ask which training and enrolment conditions apply. For a departmental English-proficiency exception, ask what evidence and confirmation are required. Credit recognition and graduation requirements may belong to different procedures, so keep the questions distinct.
In a GEA roadmap, include previous credits and any subject change alongside your score and intended intake. After comparing admission conditions, review post-admission course access to connect the application with the study that follows.
