Does two years at university qualify you for transfer?
Check programme length, completed study and credits against graduation requirements before choosing a transfer major.
Two years spent at a university do not automatically establish eligibility for transfer in Korea. Check the previous programme’s structure, completed years, credits earned against graduation requirements and the intended major together. Freshman and transfer offerings can differ even at the same university.
Korea University’s Seoul-campus Spring 2027 international transfer guide provides a concrete example. Its application period ended in August 2026. Here it is used to explain how to read eligibility; a later intake needs its own programme list and conditions.
Attendance and completed credits are different
For the standard four-year university route in that guide, the structure requires at least two completed years and at least half the previous programme’s graduation credits. Five-year programmes and British three-year degrees have separate provisions. Graduates of two- or three-year colleges must check the stated completed or expected-graduation conditions. “Two years everywhere” is not an accurate summary.
Item | Evidence | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
Programme structure | Official institution or programme information | Treating a three-year course as four years |
Completed study | Completion or academic-status record | Counting registered semesters as completed years |
Graduation credits | Rules for that specific programme | Using a general national figure |
Earned credits | Official transcript | Including courses still in progress as completed |
Available major | Transfer offerings for the intake | Relying on the freshman list |
Nationality and parental-nationality eligibility remain separate checks. Meeting the credit condition does not complete the entire eligibility review.
Identify the right numbers
In a fictional calculation, a four-year programme requiring 130 credits has a halfway point of 65. A student who has earned 65 meets that numerical component, while completed-year and other conditions still need review. A student with 57 earned credits cannot reach the same conclusion simply because two calendar years have passed. Do not invent a conversion between different credit systems.
If the transcript omits graduation requirements, obtain the curriculum rules or an institutional statement. Check that course credits, cumulative totals and study dates agree. Include earlier university history if you have already transferred.
Decide the major before paying
Wanting a new subject does not mean every department is open to international transfer applicants. Check the exact intake’s available majors, prerequisites and additional documents. Similar department names can conceal different curricula, degrees or campuses.
KU’s cited guide says the chosen major cannot be changed after payment of the application fee. Before that point, confirm the institution, campus, exact department, entry year and teaching language. Reaching an application screen does not establish that the choice has been checked.
Eligibility is not credit recognition
Eligibility credits answer whether you may apply. Recognition after admission determines which earlier courses count toward the new curriculum. Qualifying to apply does not transfer every previous credit into the new major.
For a subject change, compare potentially relevant courses with the new major’s compulsory requirements. Sequential prerequisites and courses offered only in certain semesters can affect a graduation plan. Obtain previous syllabuses and course descriptions in advance.
Prepare a useful enquiry
Collect an official transcript, proof of graduation-credit requirements, evidence of completed study and the intended department’s curriculum. Instead of saying only “I studied for two years,” state programme length, earned credits, required graduation credits, completion status and intended intake.
The same information helps GEA organise whether freshman or transfer routes merit review. Check eligibility and the actual offering before paying, then maintain a separate credit-recognition and graduation-planning table.
