Which IELTS or TOEFL test should you book?
Check the exact product, delivery mode, validity reference date and result deadline before paying for a test.
Booking “IELTS” or holding “a TOEFL score” is not enough for an application. The exact product and delivery mode must be accepted, and the result must be available by the required deadline. Similar names and score services are not automatically interchangeable.
UNIST’s Spring 2027 graduate FAQ accepts IELTS Academic including its Online format and TOEFL Home Edition within its stated scope. KU Seoul’s Spring 2027 international transfer guide excludes TOEFL MyBest and Essential, and IELTS Indicator. These completed application rounds illustrate why product-level checks matter.
Write the full test specification
Compare the booking page with the admissions guide using the brand, product, delivery mode and score format together. Do not treat different IELTS products, or all TOEFL score services, as equivalent.
Field | How to record it | Question |
|---|---|---|
Brand and product | Full name, such as IELTS Academic | Accepted for this degree and route? |
Delivery | Test centre or official online mode | Is this mode explicitly allowed? |
Score format | Single sitting or a combined-score service | Is this format excluded? |
Test and reference dates | Actual sitting and university’s date | Is it valid at the required point? |
Result and delivery | Release date and official transmission | Can it arrive before the deadline? |
Add required total and component scores where the programme specifies them. This product check does not replace the score requirement.
Check the reference date for validity
Even “valid for two years” needs a reference date. UNIST’s cited FAQ uses the online application deadline for its two-year test window. KU’s cited transfer guide checks validity at document submission. The relevant date can differ for the same sitting.
Review the test date, name, birth date and verification details on your report, then record each university’s reference date. Do not substitute the result-issue date for the test date or calculate from the day you opened an application page.
Results may arrive too late even if the test does not
A test before the deadline does not necessarily produce a usable result before it. Result publication, report issue and official transmission can be separate steps. UNIST’s cited round specifies a deadline for English evidence and does not accept late submission.
In a fictional schedule, an applicant sits just before the document deadline but receives the result afterwards. A booking confirmation should not be assumed to replace a score report. Check for an explicitly permitted alternative or later submission process; otherwise consider a sitting with results in time or a later intake.
Apply the same method to TOPIK
KU’s cited guide distinguishes the accepted TOPIK scope and excludes trial tests. Where a language-centre certificate or another Korean-study record is accepted, check the institution, level and required evidence.
A language centre’s internal result, an online-course certificate and an official TOPIK report should not share one undifferentiated “Korean ability” box. Admission evidence and post-admission major-course conditions can also differ. Match the exact recognised category to the document you possess.
Complete one row before booking
Record the university, degree, intake, full product, delivery mode, required score, reference date and submission method. For an uncertain product or a resit-related score arrangement, consult the receiving university as well as the test provider.
In a GEA roadmap, separate scores already held from planned sittings. When considering matching, prepare the precise product and validity details from your report. Establishing whether an accepted result can be submitted in time comes before comparing high and low scores.
Record your intended field, current qualification and target intake in the free study roadmap. To compare university options, review the scope and application route for GEA university matching.
