Should you wait for GKS or prepare general admission?
Compare routes, programme availability and funding conditions on separate calendars before choosing a graduate application.
Comparing GKS with general graduate admission requires more than asking whether a scholarship exists. Separate the application route and timetable, the actual programme and funding after admission. General admission does not necessarily mean fully self-funded study; a GKS university listing does not make every graduate programme available.
KAIST’s live official timeline, checked on 24 October 2026, lists general admission for Fall 2027 from 7 January to 5 February 2027, while its 2027 GKS announcement is planned for February. Treating both routes as one calendar can therefore disrupt preparation. Do not fill gaps in the unconfirmed 2027 GKS graduate rules with 2026 conditions.
Build two calendars
Read the university’s intake guide alongside its scholarship information for general admission. For GKS, connect the year’s government notice with university instructions. Different receiving bodies can mean different first deadlines and submission methods. The 2026 GKS-G notice describes embassy and designated-university routes; it does not prove every next-year procedure will be identical.
Item | General graduate admission | GKS graduate route |
|---|---|---|
Starting document | University and intake guide | That year’s GKS-G notice |
Application destination | University-designated system | Route and receiving body permitted that year |
Programme scope | Degree and department offerings | Route-specific university and department files |
Funding | University, laboratory or personal resources | Support items and conditions for that year |
Calendar | Application, references, documents, decision | First receiving body and subsequent stages |
Language | Programme admission and study conditions | GKS and university conditions together |
First establish that you are comparing the same degree and research field.
Check the department, not only the university name
The 2026 GKS-G notice provides separate general-university and specialised-route university information attachments. Choose the file matching your route, then check department, degree, specialisation and additional university conditions. A university name alone does not establish that your master’s or doctoral field is included.
For a fictional preparation example, a chemistry graduate interested in materials research records the exact graduate school, department, degree and corresponding entry in the file. Connecting that entry with research groups and teaching language helps keep subject fit central.
Read general-admission funding precisely
Scholarships can differ in tuition payment, living support, continuation conditions and timing. UNIST’s Spring 2027 FAQ provides an official example of funding categories with different upfront-tuition treatment. “Full support” should not automatically become “no money is needed before the semester.”
List tuition, first payment date, living costs, insurance, housing and the start of support separately. Where the new notice is absent, track a task to check it instead of presenting last year’s amount as current. Align monthly and semester units before comparing figures.
Verify whether the combination of applications is allowed
General admission, GKS and routes within GKS can have their own rules on duplicate applications and successful applicants. Two calendars are a preparation tool, not permission to apply through every combination. Check the exact year and university rules for your intended combination.
If you already hold an offer or have accepted it, ask what must be maintained or withdrawn when another funding route becomes available. Application submission, scholarship selection and final registration are different states.
Prepare the shared material now
Academic records, research interests, experience and the type and validity of language tests are useful common preparation. Keep referee forms, statement limits and authentication stages separate by route. The same experience may answer different questions and should not simply be pasted everywhere.
Bring your intended degree, research field, possible intake, available resources and document status to GEA. Organise the actual programmes and published routes first. Waiting for a GKS notice need not stop preparation for a different university timetable.
