Master's, integrated MS–PhD or PhD: which route should you apply for?
Compare your awarded or expected qualification with the exact degree a department recruits. Keep your eventual research goal separate from this application choice.
Choose a graduate route by comparing your current qualification, any qualification you will obtain before entry and your intended research path. Wanting to conduct doctoral research does not itself establish eligibility for direct PhD admission. A master's and an integrated programme should remain separate options even where their entry qualification is similar.
Separate the eventual goal from this application
NIIED's education-system guidance identifies a bachelor's degree or equivalent for master's or integrated master's–doctoral entry. UNIST's Spring 2027 second-round FAQ likewise distinguishes bachelor's-level entry to master's/integrated programmes from master's-level entry to a doctorate. That UNIST round has closed.
Record whether you are studying for, expecting or already hold each award. Compare this with actual certificates. Beside an expected qualification, record the likely award and document-issue dates. Enrolment in a programme and possession of its degree are different facts.
Check the department's programme column
An institution offering integrated study does not establish that every department recruits it. Read the combination of department, degree and funding category. Similar subject names can belong to different graduate schools, campuses or programmes.
Item | Record | Next question |
|---|---|---|
Current award | Exact degree, issuer and award status | What evidence establishes it? |
Expected award | Award and issue dates | Does it meet the entry timing? |
Intended route | Master's, integrated or PhD | Does this department recruit it? |
Research interest | Question, field and relevant experience | What preparation is needed? |
Academic structure | Coursework, research and completion rules | Which regulations should I read? |
Preparation | Language, documents and statements | Which round is realistic? |
Compare master's and integrated study through your plans
If you hold a bachelor's and consider both routes, first describe what you want to learn and how you hope to continue research. Read the department's curriculum, research areas and academic structure before focusing on which route sounds quicker.
An integrated programme involves more than submitting two applications at once. Progression, degree awards and programme changes are governed separately by each institution. Keep the admission eligibility table and the academic regulations as different documents when planning longer-term study.
Doctoral applicants should organise research experience
If you hold a master's, record what you personally did in the thesis or projects and the questions you want to pursue. Holding the required award and having suitable research preparation are different checks. Similar degree titles can conceal different subjects and methods.
Collect material you can explain: topic, role, method, result and limitations. This supports both the statement and interview preparation. If your direction is broad, compare two or three departments' curricula and mark common and different areas.
A fictional choice between two routes
Imagine a final-year bachelor's student considering a master's and an integrated programme in the same field. The student first verifies programme availability and degree evidence, then compares research interests and academic structure. A direct PhD remains in the column for its separate qualification requirement.
The next action is to put award date, language evidence, recruiting department and statement preparation on one calendar. That narrows the actual admission route rather than merely choosing an attractive degree name.
Check the full programme identity before submission
Write institution, graduate school, department, degree and intake on one line. Check that a similar name has not led you to the wrong degree and that an expected award is not entered as awarded. Read the rules for changing application information before finalising it.
