Exchange, visiting study or a full degree in Korea: which route fits?
A semester abroad and a new qualification serve different goals. Compare home-university nomination, partnership status, credit recognition, fees and the final award.
Studying in Korea does not always mean enrolling for a new degree. Students may spend part of their current programme at another university through exchange or visiting study. First decide whether the goal is a new qualification or a period abroad within existing study.
Identify the first contact for exchange or visiting study
SKKU distinguishes exchange students nominated by partner universities from visiting applicants who may come from non-partner institutions. Check the appropriate route with your home international office.
An agency recommendation, personal interest and formal home-university nomination are different records. A partnership does not establish that a particular student has been selected.
Compare the routes with the same questions
Question | Exchange or visiting study | Full-degree admission |
|---|---|---|
Goal | How long will you study elsewhere within your current education? | What new award will you pursue? |
Application | Who handles nomination or visiting entry? | What admission process does the institution specify? |
Credits | How will the home university recognise courses? | What courses and credits lead to graduation? |
Costs | What is paid to which institution, and when? | What are semester tuition and the full study budget? |
Afterwards | How do return and transcript transfer work? | What follows graduation? |
Check home-university approval of credit recognition before departure. Permission to take a course and recognition towards your home major are separate decisions. Check course availability and access for exchange or visiting students too.
Read participation conditions behind the agreement
An institutional agreement may still have separate places, selection criteria, subject restrictions and calendars. Keep home selection and host acceptance as separate states. For visiting study, read the required enrolment history and direct application process.
For example, someone awaiting exchange selection can prepare proposed courses and recognition questions. That does not establish a confirmed host dormitory or course place.
Use the correct financial and practical plan
Check the receiving institution for tuition, any waiver, housing and insurance under the actual arrangement. “Exchange” does not mean every expense is waived. Record study dates, housing dates and the return plan together.
Prepare Korean stay documents for the particular route. Copying a new-degree admissions checklist into a visiting case can create the wrong document and timing expectations.
Start from the educational goal
Record your degree or short-study goal, current enrolment, intended period and courses in the free roadmap. University staff can use GEA institutional enquiries to discuss student information work for their existing approved exchange arrangements.
