E-7-4R counselling: separate your details from employer information
Keep your residence and work history separate from company-confirmed duties and pay. Prepare a useful first enquiry even when the intended employer is undecided.
Start E-7-4R employment counselling with the residence and work information you already know. Mark company-dependent details separately. If the intended employer is undecided, describe your desired role and region rather than inventing a company, salary or employment record.
Define what you need to decide
Explain whether you want to remain with your present employer, explore a new workplace, or review an offer whose terms are still being discussed. These situations require different follow-up information. A first consultation organises facts; it is separate from a completed residence-status application.
The Ministry of Justice announced employment and service-history changes in June 2026 and further improvements under development on 22 October. Bring the year and revision date of any older checklist you have received.
Divide the information by who can confirm it
Group | Record first | Who or what confirms it |
|---|---|---|
Current status | Exact status, expiry and address | Your registration and permission records |
Work history | Employer, start/end dates and actual duties | Your records and employer evidence |
Study and income | Language evidence and income year | Certificates and issuing institutions |
Intended work | Whether an employer is confirmed, region and role | Recruiter or employer proposal |
Company terms | Workplace, duties, pay components and hours | Company-confirmed information |
A completed preparation table does not mean every application document has been issued. Copy the status shown on your registration record. Distinguish a business brand from the employer named in a contract.
If you do not have a new employer
Keep your current job separate from the job you want. Describe your actual present duties and employment dates. Mark the new employer as undecided and add practical information: locations you could move to, tasks you can perform and your possible moving date.
Do not fill the gap with an assumed salary. If an online field does not explain your circumstances adequately, prepare a short message for the adviser before submitting. Exploring work and reviewing a confirmed employer's terms are separate stages.
Fictional example: two workplaces in one enquiry
A fictional worker says, “I work in production in Busan and want to move to another region.” Separate the enquiry into current employer, current duties and dates; desired location and role; new employer undecided; and the question of which information must come from each company.
When an offer appears, add the proposed employer, actual duties, workplace, pay and intended start. Do not mark a status change or workplace procedure as completed before it is actually resolved.
Send a useful first enquiry
“I currently hold ○○ status, expiring on ○○. I performed ○○ duties at my current employer during ○○. My intended employer is confirmed/undecided, and I am considering work in ○○. Please help identify the company information and next checks needed.”
Begin with a factual summary and a list of available documents. Add the income year and the language test's name, level and issue date. After the reply, separate confirmed facts, items to request from the company and the next review date.
