Mapping Overseas Major Interest to Real Programmes: A 2027 Track-Change Example
Separate interest counts from unique students and map degree, campus, entry type, track and intake. HUFS’s ELLT change makes the mapping problem concrete.
Enquiries about “business” or “IT” do not yet tell a university which programme it can recruit for. Preserve the student’s words, then connect them to the official programme, degree, teaching language, entry type and intake. Separate a confirmed connection from a question that still needs asking.
Keep interest and programme in separate fields
“Something in computing” should not silently become a named department. Store the original expression, a standardised field and the official admission unit separately. A field supports exploration; an admission unit is what the applicant selects.
Freshman entry may be through a division while transfer entry names a specific major. Keep those choices, degree levels and entry types distinct.
A real change: ELLT’s 2027 Korean track
HUFS’s March 2027 undergraduate guide changes ELLT from English Track B to the Korean track. It also distinguishes campus and freshman/transfer entry. An English-related department name does not establish its teaching track.
The Okayama Korean Education Center’s notice confirms the same change. When reusing an earlier counselling table, update the intake-specific track and translated guidance, not just the name.
A GEA mapping-table example
Expression received | Connection to official data | Status | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
Wants ELLT in English | HUFS March 2027 ELLT: Korean track | Language mismatch | Recheck language/major priorities |
Wants international studies in English | International Studies English track in that guide | Programme candidate linked | Check entry type and requirements |
Wants IT | No specific unit chosen | Field only | Ask degree, content and language |
Same name, different intake | Compare intake guides | Awaiting update | Confirm current intake version |
A candidate link is different from an eligibility decision or completed application. Reuse institutional programme codes where available; attach official name, campus, degree, entry type, language/track, intake and source version.
Count people and interests separately
One student comparing business and IT represents two interests but one person. Define deduplication and record multiple interests explicitly.
Separate programmes actually offered for the intake from broad aspirations. Use actionable statuses: candidate linked, awaiting student clarification, or outside this intake’s offerings. Do not allocate unanswered enquiries to a department by assumption.
Carry changes through the whole record
When a new guide appears, compare names, tracks, entry types and campuses. Revisit affected candidates and update partner guidance and the current aggregate together. Preserve earlier classification definitions so a real demand change can be distinguished from a coding change.
For cooperation with GEA, prepare the current official programme table and anonymised examples of interest expressions. Identify where links are wrong or decisions stop. This helps define classification and guidance work that references existing programme information.
