Does an English-medium degree waive a language test?
An English diploma is not the same as proof of English instruction. Check exactly what an MOI letter must establish.
If you studied a previous degree in English, check whether the graduate programme accepts official evidence of the language of instruction from your university instead of an English test. A diploma printed in English does not by itself establish that the degree was taught in English. The receiving programme’s rules decide the exemption.
UNIST’s Spring 2027 graduate guide and FAQ include a category for a bachelor’s or higher degree completed with English as the language of instruction, supported by official university confirmation. This completed round provides a concrete preparation example; its condition does not automatically extend to every Korean graduate school or later intake.
What does MOI establish?
MOI means Medium of Instruction. The relevant evidence concerns the language used for a particular degree, not simply the language in which a document was printed.
Document | What it can establish | Further check |
|---|---|---|
Diploma in English | Degree, awarding institution and award | Does it explicitly state teaching language? |
Transcript in English | Courses, results and study history | English titles do not prove English teaching |
University-issued MOI letter | The degree’s language of instruction | Does it cover the required scope? |
Some English-taught courses | Language of particular courses | Distinguish from a whole English-medium degree |
Official test report | Ability measured by that test | Product, validity and minimum score |
Check that the intended route accepts MOI before ordering documents.
What should you ask your university for?
Ask the academic-records office for official confirmation identifying your degree, subject, study period and language of instruction. If it uses a standard form, compare the contents with the receiving programme’s requirements. Check any requirements for signature, stamp, issue date or verifiable contact information instead of assuming a universal form.
Compare the English name and degree title with your passport and other records. Resolve differences that make the documents hard to connect. Translation must not expand the actual teaching arrangement into an inaccurate claim that the whole degree was in English.
What if only some courses were in English?
Imagine a fictional graduate whose bachelor’s courses were half in English and half in another language. An English diploma does not justify describing the entire degree as English-medium. Obtain confirmation of the actual scope and ask whether it qualifies under the target rule.
Working in English after graduation or taking a short language course is separate evidence. If the university accepts another exemption category, review that category rather than combining different evidence under the label MOI.
Test exemption does not establish an English-taught programme
Exemption from an English report and the language of every required course are separate questions. Check departmental information on laboratory communication, compulsory classes, theses and presentations. An application without an English score does not by itself establish an English-medium degree.
An exemption also does not change the required language of statements or interviews. Where forms specify English, as UNIST’s application does for designated writing, follow that instruction. Identify precisely which document requirement is waived.
Manage uncertainty before deadlines
Place the exemption wording, available letter, actual teaching arrangement and deadline together. When asking the university, state the degree, issuer and what the letter confirms, not nationality alone. Keep the answer connected to that application.
If preparing a test as an alternative, check the accepted product and result date. Separate the enquiry schedule from the backup schedule so that waiting for an exemption answer does not leave too little time for a result. In a GEA roadmap, distinguish an exemption confirmed from one still under review.
