After the E-7-4 document-reform announcement: prepare an extension file
Distinguish the 22 October 2026 improvement plans from evidence for an actual application. Separate earlier submissions from changed employment, income and address details.
For an E-7-4 extension, separate previous submissions from changed facts instead of discarding old files and waiting for a new checklist. The Ministry's 22 October 2026 release describes improvements being pursued. An actual application needs the applicable instruction, application type and current evidence.
Distinguish the announcement from an operational checklist
The release describes reducing extension documents from at least twelve to no more than seven, alongside incentives for long service. Its attachment describes the online guide as a planned trial and leaves the publication route to be confirmed.
It does not itself give a definitive checklist of seven or fewer documents and an individual implementation date. Do not arbitrarily remove five documents from an old list. Compare the actual instructions applicable to your application.
Organise three bundles
Bundle | Record | Review question |
|---|---|---|
Previous submissions | Document name, date and application type | Is it required again? |
Changed facts | Employer, duties, pay, address and real changes | New evidence or another procedure? |
This application | Current status, expiry and purpose | Applicable instruction and format? |
Possessing a document is different from confirmation that it can be reused. Note issue-date requirements, relevant periods and changed facts beside it.
Do not mix first change and extension
An initial change to E-7-4, an extension and an application involving changed work circumstances ask different questions. Check which application type an old “E-7-4 checklist” addresses.
Summarise status, expiry and previous applications. Record changed employer or terms and the related dates separately. An extension heading does not automatically complete another unfinished procedure.
Fictional example: changed address and salary
A fictional holder remains with the employer but has a new address and pay. Record former and present address, contract-change date, new pay period and any completed related procedure.
Copying the old contract may misdescribe current facts. Identify what changed and which period must be evidenced instead of collecting every possible new document indiscriminately.
What is planned for the online guide?
The attachment describes occupation search, diagnosis using education, experience, salary and employer information, application-specific checklists and a points calculator. When an actual route and applicable instructions are confirmed, compare the selected application type with your preparation table.
Keep a self-check result separate from the actual authority's decision. Record the lookup date and selected type with a printed checklist.
Send a useful extension enquiry
“I hold E-7-4 until ○○. I have my earlier document list. Changes since then are ○○. Following the 22 October announcement, I would like to compare the current requirements for my application and identify evidence to reissue.”
Record reusable documents, new requests, unresolved questions and intended submission date. Organising accurate present facts can continue while the detailed implementation is being confirmed.
