Dormitory or private rental in Korea: your move-in checklist
Compare allocation, check-in dates, vacation stays, meals and facilities before choosing accommodation. For a rental, separate deposits, monthly charges and contract terms before signing.
Choose between a dormitory and private rental by checking availability, move-in dates, daily rules, meals, commuting and contract terms. Monthly rent alone cannot answer the question. Receiving an admission offer still leaves a separate accommodation application and arrival process to organise.
Does admission automatically include a dormitory room?
Check your own programme's application and allocation process. For example, Hanyang University's ERICA exchange and visiting student housing guide states that allocation is not automatically guaranteed and requires an application during the designated period. It also excludes early check-in. That example concerns exchange and visiting students; locate the notice for your degree or language programme and check the corresponding details.
Compare the living arrangement
Item | Ask the dormitory | Ask about a private rental |
|---|---|---|
Moving in | Allocation result, check-in date and hours | Contract start, keys and actual move-in |
Payments | Included meals, utilities and extra charges | Deposit, rent, management fee and utilities |
Daily life | Roommates, return hours, kitchen and laundry | Noise, heating, cooking, laundry and internet |
Vacation | Permission to remain and extra application | Whether the contract continues through vacation |
Moving out | Application, inspection and refund process | Contract ending, cleaning, settlement and deposit return terms |
Study in Korea's housing guide explains that dormitory conditions vary between universities and recommends inspecting a property before signing a lease. Decide who can inspect the accommodation and when, instead of relying only on listing photographs.
Match your arrival time to the check-in hours
A late-night flight may arrive after the dormitory office closes. Send the university your expected arrival time and confirm where and when you can collect your key. If you arrive before the permitted check-in date, organise the intervening nights and the move from temporary accommodation.
Before departure, check whether bedding, towels and household essentials are provided. List the documents the residence requests and their submission dates. Keep accommodation confirmation with your passport and admission materials so the relevant papers are easy to locate after arrival.
Separate a rental deposit from monthly spending
Ask what the management fee includes and who pays electricity, water, gas and internet. Record the deposit as money needed at signing, separately from recurring living costs. Read the address and space being rented, contracting party, duration, payment schedule, early termination and return conditions. Ask about unclear provisions before signing.
Consider a fictional student returning home during vacation. For a dormitory, the student needs to ask whether the room must be emptied, whether vacation residence needs another application, and whether luggage storage is available. With a private rental, record whether payments continue while away. These questions make the vacation plan concrete.
Connect your housing payment dates to initial study costs and scholarships, then complete your monthly living budget.
