How can you apply to a Korean graduate programme in a different subject?
Separate permission to apply from subject readiness. Compare prior-major restrictions, prerequisite courses, relevant experience and the actual study plan.
To change subjects for graduate study in Korea, ask two questions: are you eligible to apply, and are you prepared to study the new field? A programme may accept different undergraduate backgrounds while still requiring foundational courses, language skills or a suitable research plan. Start with a named department and degree.
Read entry rules before relying on a department name
Ewha’s Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation FAQ provides an example without a prior-major restriction. That example does not establish the rules for engineering, clinical or other research programmes.
A business graduate’s interest in data and a record of mathematics or programming study are different evidence. Read the requirements, then connect your transcript and experience to them. “Interdisciplinary” in a programme name does not establish eligibility for every background.
Build a subject-change preparation sheet
Area | Evidence you can provide | Question for the department |
|---|---|---|
Entry eligibility | Previous degree, major and transcript | Are prior subjects restricted? |
Foundations | Courses and syllabuses | Which prerequisites are required? |
Relevant experience | Actual projects and responsibilities | What experience can support assessment? |
Academic purpose | A concrete question in the new field | Which teaching or research addresses it? |
Study plan | Language, available time and intake | How would additional courses affect study? |
Do not fill gaps in evidence with a longer personal statement. List missing courses, unfamiliar tools and foundation reading separately. This helps decide between applying in the current round and preparing for a later intake.
Compare professional and research-oriented study
Your purpose may be to expand professional work or enter a research field. Compare compulsory courses, thesis or project requirements, teaching language and schedules. Names alone do not establish difficulty. SKKU’s official programme descriptions illustrate different structures even within business education.
If the goal is a regulated qualification, separately check whether the proposed degree meets its educational requirements. A master’s in a related field and a professional licence should not be described as the same outcome.
Connect previous experience to a new question
For example, a trade professional interested in logistics could explain a real stock, transport or transaction problem encountered at work. Distinguish personal responsibilities from the analysis methods still to be learned, then connect the question to actual courses.
Prepare to explain your foundations and further learning plan in an interview. Keep responsibilities and dates consistent across employment evidence, the personal statement and research plan.
Complete three lines before enquiring
Record your previous award and subject, the new question you want to study, and the evidence supporting that direction. Use the free roadmap to organise them. With GEA university matching, compare departmental entry restrictions alongside the curriculum.
