Student part-time work in Korea: check permission before your first shift
Separate university confirmation, application, permission and the actual schedule. Check your own conditions instead of copying another student's working hours.
Signing a contract does not complete a student's part-time employment procedure. Obtain the required university confirmation and immigration permission, then match the first shift, duties and schedule to the actual conditions granted. An employer's invitation to start tomorrow is different from permission being completed.
Separate the contract, university check and permission
The Ministry of Government Legislation explains that students can combine study with part-time work after obtaining the required advance permission for activities outside their status. D-2 and D-4 subcategories and study or language conditions differ.
Start with your registration record and study status when contacting the university's international student office. A university confirmation is not the immigration decision. An application receipt is not the same as an approved outcome.
Track the steps before starting
Step | Fact to check | Evidence of completion |
|---|---|---|
Offer | Actual duties, place, hours and pay | Employer-confirmed terms |
University | Programme, study status and relevant language evidence | University guidance and confirmation |
Application | Correct documents through the current route | Receipt and further requests |
Outcome | Permission and its conditions | Actual result |
Work preparation | First shift and schedule match the outcome | Schedule checked with employer |
Do not automatically complete the next row when one stage finishes. Confirm current document formats through the university and application route.
How to check your working hours
Students do not all have one shared allowance. Identify programme, year, status subcategory, language evidence, university conditions and semester or vacation period. Official guidance distinguishes these factors.
Write your exact details first. Then compare the applicable guidance with your actual permission. Do not insert a friend's hours or an internet maximum into the schedule. If considering more than one job, disclose each employer, workplace, duty and proposed timetable for the necessary checks.
Fictional example: weekday and weekend jobs
A fictional student wants evening restaurant shifts and a different weekend workplace. “I heard weekends are fine” is not enough to combine them. Record each offer separately and check which conditions and permissions apply.
After the permitted workplace and conditions are clear, reflect them in the timetable. Before accepting changed duties, location or hours, check whether they fit the existing permission or require another procedure.
A message for the employer
“As an international student, I need to complete the relevant checks and permission. Please confirm the actual duties, workplace address, days, hours, pay and contact. I would like to agree the first working day after checking the outcome and conditions.”
If the employer needs an immediate start, explain the unfinished stage rather than promising an invented processing time.
Connect work with study and budgeting
Do not treat unconfirmed work income as money already available for the first month. Put classes, exams and travel into a calendar before considering shifts. Keep employer terms, university confirmation, application records, the decision and the actual schedule together. These records make it easier to ask a precise question when the semester or offer changes.
