International student orientation: prepare for arrival and the first week
Use government housing guidance and real university support channels to plan arrival, accommodation, academic access and asking for help in the first week.
Pre-arrival education should let students practise arrival, housing, finding academic information and asking for help. Add activities in which students locate their own dates and contact routes, beyond distributing a guide.
Choose content from official information
Study in Korea groups housing, everyday facilities and transport information in its living guide. Universities can add campus-specific move-in, academic and counselling details. Government living and housing guide
Dong-A's student-life page introduces actual facilities including libraries and campus health centres. This can support an activity in which students find the appropriate help point for their own campus. Official university life information
Activities before travel
- Find your route and address from the airport to accommodation
- Compare arrival time with permitted housing move-in dates
- Identify the first campus and office to visit
- Mark the next action and required items in the university's notice
- Save contact routes for different situations
Ask students to explain their own arrival date, address and contact route, rather than memorising transport names.
First-week academic and living tasks
Use short tasks: find an academic notice, check a class timetable, learn attendance procedures, read housing rules and request advice. For example, ask whom to contact and what information to send if arrival and housing dates differ, using the actual housing notice.
Invoices also provide useful activities. As in the published example where tuition and housing cover different periods, students can locate their own accommodation period and next payment date. A real cost-information example
Check whether students can use the information
Check whether students can explain their next action, locate an official notice and write a question to the appropriate office. Record confusing information and items needing explanation, then use these observations to revise the next session.
GEA's cooperation areas in cultural diversity, academic accessibility and pre-arrival orientation can be discussed around these practical information-use tasks. Share student languages, programmes, arrival dates and the responsible department.
