Study-abroad agents: prepare the first student profile before contacting Korea
Before asking which Korean university will accept a student, identify the intended degree, preceding qualification, teaching language and intake. Use six profile fields and three practical review examples.
Before referring your first student to a Korean university or partner, summarise the intended degree, the qualification supporting that application and the target intake. “Which university can accept this student?” accompanied only by a passport image leaves the recipient guessing whether the request concerns undergraduate or master’s admission.
Eight fields to establish first
Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
Nationality | Student’s current nationality and any nationality history requiring clarification | Prevents residence being treated as nationality |
Current country of residence | Country where the student currently lives | Clarifies the referral route and where documents are prepared |
Intended course | Language study, associate, bachelor’s or master’s | Prevents comparison across different degrees |
Previous education | Awarding institution, programme, award title and graduation date | Identifies the preceding qualification |
Subject and teaching language | Preferred field and Korean/English instruction | Distinguishes similarly named tracks |
Academic and language evidence | Original grade and scale; test, result and publication date | Separates existing evidence from future plans |
Target timing | Entry semester and expected document availability | Reveals materials arriving after a deadline |
Available budget | First-payment budget, currency and treatment of living costs | Allows a meaningful cost discussion |
Study in Korea explains the basic progression: university entry requires high school graduation or equivalent qualifications; master’s entry requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Consequently, “university education” is less informative than the actual award and awarding institution. Government education-system guide
Gather decision information before a full original-document package
An initial partner enquiry can identify the company, operating country, intended course and these eight fields using a student reference. There is no need to put passport numbers or extensive identifying information in a public enquiry. Agree on required evidence and its transfer route when preparing the actual application.
Separate facts seen in documents from the student’s own account. A graduation date reported verbally and a checked expected-graduation certificate are different evidence states. Replace a broad description such as “studying Korean” with the current course stage, any existing test result and the next test or result date.
Three profile-review examples
A: High school graduate seeking a Korean-taught business bachelor’s degree, with a language result. Check the department actually recruiting, result validity, submission schedule and budget. Do not match the student to an English track merely because its title includes business.
B: Current bachelor’s student seeking a master’s degree, with graduation timing unresolved. Establish expected completion and evidence dates before approaching programmes. Being enrolled is not the same as holding the award.
C: Student planning language study first and a master’s degree later. Record current language-course preparation and subsequent master’s requirements as two stages. Language admission is not master’s admission.
These are illustrative situations for designing a referral profile, not actual student outcomes.
Ask a question the recipient can answer
Instead of “please recommend universities”, try: “The student holds a bachelor’s degree and seeks Korean-taught master’s study in business. Here are the target intake and academic records. Which recruiting departments can be reviewed, and what information remains necessary?”
This narrows the enquiry and reduces repeated requests. Study in Korea’s preparation flow also separates choosing a programme, applying, receiving admission and subsequent preparation. Official preparation flow
