Ewha Womans University was founded in 1886 by Mary F. Scranton, an American missionary, during the reign of Emperor Gojong, the 26th king of the Joseon Dynasty. It was the first educational institution for women in Korea and is now the largest women’s university in the world.
Today, despite many changes over time, the university’s original architectural structures can still be found throughout the campus. The name “Ewha,” meaning “Pear Blossoms,” was bestowed by Emperor Gojong in 1887, inspired by the grove of pear trees said to have grown near Scranton’s residence.
