My flight is in a month! What should I do first?
Let's make your D-30 list. Six things.
One: confirm your housing, a dorm or a room, before you fly.
Two: pack your original documents, your passport, admission letter, and visa papers,
in your carry-on bag, never in checked luggage.
Three: exchange some cash, and check that your card works abroad.
Four: if you take regular medicine,
bring it with an English copy of your prescription.
Five: know what you can't bring.
Meat, fruit, and plants must be declared at customs, and undeclared pork products
from countries with African swine fever can mean very large fines.
Some cold medicines and sleeping pills contain controlled ingredients.
Even with a prescription, you can't bring them in without approval.
Quick check: can you bring that kind of cold medicine without approval?
Good thing I checked. I almost packed mine!
Six: plan your first-day route, from the airport to your dorm, before you land.
Put them on dates, and your D-30 list is ready.
Airport pickup is usually arranged by your school.
GEA also offers a separate paid pickup service, and phone advice on your stay,
wherever you study in Korea.
That would make the first day a lot less scary.
Now, add your departure date, and whether your housing is confirmed.
Next up: your first ninety days in Korea. See you in Module 7!
See you there!
