I got my visa! Now I just pack and go, right?
Congratulations! You got your visa. Now, are you ready for life in Korea?
Um... I can't even order food in Korean.
Let's fix that. Here are twenty survival phrases for five places.
Listen, then say each one out loud.
First, greetings.
안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo) — Hello.
만나서 반가워요 (mannaseo bangawoyo) — Nice to meet you.
감사합니다 (gamsahamnida) — Thank you.
죄송합니다 (joesonghamnida) — I'm sorry.
I said them all out loud. That felt good!
On the bus or subway.
(i beoseu hakgyoe gayo?) — Does this bus go to the school?
여기서 내려요 (yeogiseo naeryeoyo) — I'm getting off here.
(jihacheollyeogi eodiyeyo?) — Where is the subway station?
교통카드 충전해 주세요 (gyotongkadeu chungjeonhae juseyo) — Please top up my transit card.
At a restaurant.
이거 주세요 (igeo juseyo) — This one, please.
물 좀 주세요 (mul jom juseyo) — Some water, please.
안 맵게 해 주세요 (an maepge hae juseyo) — Not spicy, please.
계산해 주세요 (gyesanhae juseyo) — The bill, please.
Not spicy, please. I'm saving that one!
At a clinic or hospital.
여기가 아파요 (yeogiga apayo) — It hurts here.
열이 나요 (yeori nayo) — I have a fever.
알레르기가 있어요 (allereugiga isseoyo) — I have an allergy.
(yeongeo hal su inneun bun isseoyo?) — Is there someone who speaks English?
And at school.
다시 한번 말씀해 주세요 (dasi hanbeon malsseumhae juseyo) — Could you say that again, please?
질문이 있어요 (jilmuni isseoyo) — I have a question.
(gukjecheoga eodiyeyo?) — Where is the international office?
You don't need perfect Korean. A few clear phrases, said politely, go a long way.
And if I don't understand, I can ask them to say it again!
Quick check: at the clinic, which phrase fits best?
